July 9th - The Shortest Day in History

On July 9th, the Earth spun round a few milliseconds faster than ever before - making it the shortest day in history. While some scientists viewed this anomaly as a result of climate instability, others dismissed it as a normal fluctuation.

England win the UEFA Women’s Euros

For the second time, the Lionesses have taken home the Euros trophy. After their loss in the 2023 World Cup, they rejoiced in successfully beating Spain (second time lucky). The tight 1-1 draw led to penalties, where goalkeeper Hannah Hampton made some impressive saves, allowing Chloe Kelly to seal the 3-1 penalty shootout victory. This marked a significant improvement in popularity of women’s football in the UK.

No ceasefire, no deal: Trump and Putin’s ‘Alaska Summit’

In Anchorage, Alaska, Trump and Putin met to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine. Trump gave Putin a red carpet welcome, which Russia viewed as a diplomatic victory. Following three hours of talks and supposed ‘great progress’, no ceasefire or deal was confirmed. With neither answering any journalists’ questions, the Summit concluded with Putin suggesting they should next meet in Moscow.

Slang terms like ‘skibidi’ and ‘delulu’ to be included in the Cambridge dictionary

Cambridge Dictionary has announced the addition of TikTok slang - such as delulu, skibidi, and rizz. The decision received a mixed reaction: younger audiences found it both funny and validating, while critics complained about the decline of the English language. Either way, it confirmed how quickly slang is moving from memes to dictionaries and mainstream use.
